Indian Women's Cricket Team Fell 9 Short, Yet Created History

With high hopes the Indian Women's Cricket Team went in to the finals of the World Cup against England, though the result came out against the expectations of everyone the team managed to create history despite falling 9 runs short of the target set by the England team.

Congratulations to the England team for becoming the world champions but the hearts won by the Indian girls in blue who fought like a warrior and at the end came out as winners, despite losing the match and the championship.

Before going to the world cup no one even expected the team to play so well and reach the finals of the world cup. The team went on to beat the best teams participating in the tournament including the New Zealand and Australia, that too convincingly.

Reaching the finals of the tournament was the moment when history gradually started to build up. The women's team started to get all the due coverage that they were ignored all these days. The common citizenry of India, politicians, media (national and international) all started to talk about the glorious moment if and when this team lifts the world cup.

Fighting all odds and breaking the trends this team probably for the first time got extensive coverage in the media, people too took interest in knowing about their players and their background. Many cricket lovers for the first time even knew that we have players like Harmandeep Kaur who can play as good an innings as any of the better 'hyped' hitters in men's team including Virat Kohli or a Yuvraj or Dhoni.

Captain Mithali Raj showed exceptional skills on the ground and had a different strategy for every other team that they played against and came out as winners.

Though the team fell short of 9 runs after starting a convincing chase against England after they lost 7 quick wickets within 28 runs, but the team showed exemplary talent and will to chase the target.

The team needs to learn continuously, need to sweat it out on the field as much as possible for their bright future and may be make even better strategy to come out as winners in the next world cup, but for us they are the heroes and have returned as champions, sans the cup.

AN IDEOLOGY THAT KILLED GAURI LANKESH

Killing in any civilised society is condemnable. Brutal killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh by unidentified assailants at her house in Bengaluru is a proof that there is no fear of law left in the criminals. Gauri Lankesh was a noted journalist, author, social activist, supporter of left ideology and was currently associated with a Kannadiga tabloid as editor. She was also active against the so called right wing ideology and was out on bail in defamation case against 2 BJP leaders. Her last editorial titled “In the age of false news” was a damning take on right wing fake news factory. Gauri was also a prominent face of all the protests and agitations against the BJP and to be more emphasized against PM Modi. Be it the Kanhaiya Kumar-JNU episode or cow vigilantism and lynchings across the nation. With all of these she was also accused of ‘selective activism’ against one particular ideology and sparing the left wrongdoings and the Congress within that course.

SUPREME COURT FIGHTS FOR INDIANS DEPRIVED OF THEIR FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS

The Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, or the SC/ST Act protects the dalits against discrimination and atrocities. On March 20, 2018 the Supreme Court expressed concern over misuse of the Act and ruled against automatic arrest of the ‘accused’ under the law. It also introduced the provision of anticipatory bail. The Supreme Court ruled that public servants cannot be prosecuted without the approval of the appointing authority and citizens too should be arrested only after an inquiry under the law. This led to widespread protests in the form of Bharat Bandh across five states claiming 11 lives including 4 patients who died in the ambulance waiting for the protesters to free the roads for them to reach the hospital. The central government filed the review petition in the matter. However, turning down the government's appeal to freeze the earlier verdict, the top court said, our aim is to protect innocents, we have not dilu
